Since 1990, the husband-and-wife design team of Jim Maxwell and Cindy Beckman have helped bring more than 250 restaurant and hospitality projects to life throughout Northern California and beyond. Their collaborative approach combines deep architectural expertise with a hands-on, one-on-one client experience, guiding restaurateurs from the earliest concept through the final details that make a space truly memorable.

Their work has been featured in Food Arts MagazineHistoric PreservationImageIn MarinSF Magazine, the SF Chronicle & Examiner, and the Whitney Library of Design’s “Recycled as Restaurants.” Through their firm, Architects II, they provide specialized services in restaurant and retail design, historic renovation, and accessibility compliance review and implementation.

From casual sophistication and farm-fresh warmth to upscale global concepts and cozy neighborhood gathering spots, their portfolio reflects a wide range of styles and dining experiences. Known for transforming everyday materials into distinctive design elements, Maxwell and Beckman create spaces that are both visually compelling and economically practical - helping owners control build-out costs while ensuring long-term durability and efficiency. Sustainable and affordable “green restaurant” options are thoughtfully integrated whenever possible.

Whether launching a new restaurant, refining a concept, or reimagining an existing space, Architects II works closely with each client to craft environments that support operational success, reflect the brand’s personality, and create an inviting experience for guests.
